it was extremely cool that the VMAs this year were unintentionally girl-power/feminism themed. in case you don’t know, feminism is the belief that all genders should be equal to each other politically, economically, and socially, and tonight we made some big strides! fifth harmony, an openly feminist and female-empowering women of color girlband, made history by being the first all-girl group to win a VMA since 2008 and they don’t even have a full album out yet. nicki’s ‘anaconda’ performance destroyed SO many social standards about what women should look like and how they should dress, and she’s teaching young girls that it’s okay to do what they want with their bodies. then there are other little things, like lorde (who is openly feminist) introducing taylor swift as her “friend,” the nicki/jessie j/ariana collab, and demi lovato (also openly feminist) tweeting that she loves nicki all showed the women of hollywood not being catty towards each other and actually supporting one another, which is important when girl-on-girl hate is such a big issue. laverne cox is a trans woman of color and was able to present an award tonight and sam smith is a gay performer. beyoncé won an award tonight for best video with a social message and her performance doesn’t even need an explanation as to why it was so kick-ass and inspirational. on a sort of related note, it also fucking rocks that common talked about ferguson and announced a moment of silence for mike brown, which is an issue that many people are still not aware of. it’s important for young people interested in pop culture to have idols to look up to like these, because even though there’s still a long way to go, so much progress is being made and i’m glad the VMAs got to showcase that tonight!

The best thing is that all these girls who are recognising the inequality they face but are terrified of the label of feminist due to the stigma attached to it are seeing Beyoncé, one of the most influential women in the world, proudly stand there and claim to be a feminist and it’s gonna help inspire them so much

Miley Cyrus won the biggest award up for grabs at the VMA’s last night, winning “Video Of The Year” and instead of just going up on stage and taking her trophy, she very kindly took a young homeless man with her to represent the homeless community. She took him as her date then sent him up to collect the award for her, and he had written and said a lovely speech about being homeless and the charity whilst miley looked on in tears. Don’t you ever tell me she doesn’t have a heart of gold, she is an amazing human being.
